Feature Friday: 2019 Prizm Football

October 26, 2019

[vc_row][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]Happy Friday everybody! A new series we will offer here at CardsCzar.com with be Feature Friday where we focus on a big story or release within the hobby. Since Panini happens to drop a lot of product on Fridays, this will make for plenty of content, but we wanted to start this off with arguably the most sought after affordable NFL product each year and that is Prizm Football.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”102279″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=”.vc_custom_1572070279661{padding-right: 20% !important;padding-left: 20% !important;}”][vc_column_text]Ah yes Prizm. Is it the shininess that makes people go wild each year? Or do you think it is the chase of the ever elusive rainbow? While I have some thoughts on the the amount of parallels Panini produces each year (20+ last year which is ridiculous), I do appreciate the design, re-sale value and collect-ability of Prizm.

A trend we have started to see (and one that I am excited about) is how much the football Silver parallels have appreciated in value, putting them almost in line with the basketball Silvers. For years, basketball was king when it came to Prizm Silvers, which were rare to find (we were never given a print run). At their peak, top NBA 2017-18 rookies like Jayson Tatum or Donovan Mitchell would see their Silver parallel cards go raw for ~$200, while 9-10 graded cards were fetching $300+. Graded Kawhi Leonard Silver Prizm rookies will cost you a few thousand dollars and the Belle of the Ball Giannis Anteokounmpo Graded Silver Prizm rookies…well get ready to take out a line of credit against your mortgage if you want to get your hands on one of those. Generally, you would get 1 Silver per NBA Hobby Box, helping push the rarity and value of these cards. NFL, on the other hand, made all of their 2017 rookie “Silvers”, and in previous releases, the Silver was far more rare but were not chase cards for collectors.

Enter Patrick Mahomes…

Mahomes was a rookie in 2017, and even though all of his base Prizm rookie cards have the “Silver” sheen, it has become one of the more sought after cards in the hobby, pushing a raw sale price of $250+. Some sellers misinformed collectors, promoting it as a “Silver”, while others simply stated that it was a 2017 Rookie card. Either way, the market spoke and football card collectors fell in love with Prizm Silvers. Conspiracy Theory Alert…I think this was all a ploy by Panini. You see, the 2017 NFL draft class was a strong one. Myles Garrett, DeShaun Watson, Leonard Fournette, Dalvin Cook, Patrick Mahomes, Christian McCaffrey, Alvin Kamara, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mitchell Trubisky, Corey Davis, Joe Mixon, OJ Howard…all these exciting players were being drafted to NFL teams, so my theory is Panini knew that this class would be HOT and very collectible. Guess what? They were right, and by making all of their 2017 rookie “Silvers” (2 per pack) it made sure the chase was on for future years.

Enter 2018…

Baker Mayfield, Lamar Jackson, Sam Darnold, Saquon Barkley, Calvin Ridley and a bunch of other first year players took the NFL by storm. Using the momentum they had from 2017’s Prizm release, Panini truly made the 2018 Silver a chase card, dropping one per Hobby Box. With a 300 card set (200 veteran and 100 rookies), that meant you had to rip through 300 hobby boxes (a $45,000 investment if you bought a box before the price skyrocketed) to HOPEFULLY pull the player you wanted. Not only were rookies going for a pretty penny (Baker Mayfield hit $300 raw and is available on eBay for ~$500 graded), but veterans were as well (I picked up a Tom Brady Silver for $50 and one sold last week for $100). Panini even dropped a case hit parallel, Stained Glass, with rookies and vets which was a slightly less expensive chase item since it was a parallel and not a true rookie. Needless to say, Panini did a fine job of reeling collectors in.

Enter 2019…

While it is not a deep rookie class this year, Kyler Murray, Daniel Jones, Josh Jacobs, DK Metcalf, Terry McLaurin and Marquise Brown have all had some early season smoke and their prices should reflect.

The parallels from the Hobby Boxes will stay similar to 2018

  • Silver – 1 per Hobby Box
  • Orange – #/249
  • Blue Wave – #/199
  • Hyper – #/175
  • Red Wave – #/149
  • Blue Ice – #/99
  • Green Scope – #/75
  • Purple Power – #/49
  • Camo – #/25
  • Gold – #/10
  • Gold Vinyl – #/5
  • Black Finite – 1/1

There will be more parallels dropping in retail and First Off the Line (FOTL) release as well…again, which is ridiculous, but whatevs

3 autographs per box..2 generally be of bums, while 1 should be a nicer “on card” auto, though that is not guaranteed

Inserts will average one every three packs, with Short Prints (Aurora , Break Through, Class Acts and Illumination) coming again. The most sought after insert/SP will be the Rare (1:10 Cases) Color Blast. The Color Blast visual is beautiful and will make for a nice PC piece

The RPA will drop 1 per case. Oddly enough, the RPA’s (#’d 99) generally sell for less than the base rookie autographs, which I find confusing but, again, whatevs. The card industry is weird like that

Ultimately, I am excited to pick up a box or two or Prizm over the next few weeks and will definitely do a box breakdown. I got lucky in 2018 and pulled the Jameis Winston Black Finite 1/1, so hopefully I can keep that mojo going for 2019!
