NFL Championship Weekend Recap

2020 NFL Championship Game Recaps

Arguably the two top teams from each conference squared off this weekend in the Championship round of the 2020 NFL Playoffs. Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers went into Lambeau and got the victory over Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers, in what may have been Rodgers’ last game in a Packers uniform. More on that in future blog posts if anything develops (I don’t think it will, but something to keep an eye on). This marks Brady’s 10th Super Bowl appearance since he was a rookie in 2000. If you take out the years he didn’t start (2000- rookie year playing behind Drew Bledsoe and 2007- got hurt in Week 1), Brady makes the Super Bowl 55% of the time. That is a WILD stat that may never be matched…though the QB we are talking about later on may have something to say about that.

Back to the game, the Packers had every opportunity to take out Brady and the Bucs. Even though he was the winning QB, TB12 made some mistakes and threw an INT on two straight drives. Unfortunately for Packer fans, that equated to two “3 and Outs”. If anybody should be given credit for the Buccaneer win, it should be Jason Pierre-Paul and the Tampa Bay defensive unit. They kept Rodgers uncomfortable the whole game and came up with some big turnovers that helped turn the tide of the game. In two weeks they will face yet another tough test when they play…

…the Kansas City Chiefs! After a hot start by the Buffalo Bills thanks to some turnover luck, the Chiefs were able to get right and ended up taking down the Bills rather easily 38-24. The Travis Kelce to Patrick Mahomes connection led the way and was humming to the tune of 13 catches for 118 yards and 2 TDs. The Bills Defense was the most gracious to opposing Tight Ends and Andy Reid was able to take advantage of that.

So I mentioned that there may be a player who can match Brady’s Super Bowl appearance percentage. In 3 seasons as a starting NFL QB (he sat behind Alex Smith in 2017), Patrick Mahomes will now have been to two Super Bowls and has an MVP to his name. Not too shabby for a 4 year pro. We are at a point in the sports card industry where the future is unknown, but two of the safest purchases right now are Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes.

Josh Allen and the Bills will be back. Don’t worry Bills Mafia. Allen emerged as one of the best QBs in the league in 2020 and built a great rapport with WR Stefon Diggs. With Diggs signed long term, and Allen going nowhere, the Bills future is bright! Both Allen and Diggs saw a huge hobby value increase in 2020, and they will dip a bit with the loss, but you can take advantage of that dip. While I would never suggest investing in a non QB (even though I think it’s silly RBs, WRs and TEs are underappreciated) now may be a good time to swoop in and grab a Josh Allen to hold, or a Stefon Diggs for the PC. If we saw anything with Michael Thomas’ hobby value from 2020 to 2021, sell the WRs when they are hot and buy them when they’re not. Groundbreaking stuff, I know.
